Case study
In the far North of South Africa, an electrical distribution team was busy self-destructing. Impacted by years of poor attitudes and personality clashes, this team had many different "people dynamics" to contend with.
These were tough, hardworking and highly opinionated people, with many axes to grind. Customer service, quality and productivity were negatively impacted and costs were rising through a lack of care and accountability.
The challenges were cultural, historical, language-based, interpersonal, perception, prejudice and a deep rooted anger and distrust of different ranks, departments and race groups. Limited office space and a lack of parking added to a potential powder keg.
Jan Vermeulen, the supervisor, reported – “I had a group of 30 people from diverse cultures. They could not get on with each other, there was continuous friction from different race groups, and between people from the same race and cultural group.
The people were negative and not satisfied with anything. Complaints were the order of the day, this placed our depot in a bad light with management…”
15 months after the initial intervention, Jan wrote, “Communication and respect improved from all sides 100%. The respect between different race groups has been restored and some of the people who were negative have changed so much that they have been promoted to higher positions with greater responsibility.
Ownership, professionalism and accountability is now managed by the team."
